Melville Koppies: worksheets for schools
We are building up a set of worksheets which may be freely downloaded
and used and adapted as resource material.
We also welcome contributions which we will add to this page. Here are the guidelines for contributions: Material should be in any of these formats: Open Office, MS Word 2003 or 2007 for printed material, JPEG format for pictures. Send it as an attachment to the email address above. Natural History A worksheet on "learning about leaves" which gives an idea of a focussed activity which can be planned for a school visit. The worksheet also gives some suggestions about follow-up activities like exploring the common names of trees in some of South Africa's official languages. There is also a teacher's guide with more technical information. The worksheet is only available in MS Word format, and because of the illustrations may take some time to load.
Worksheet: MS Word Document
Natural History A worksheet on Invasive Alien plants. This worksheet may possibly be more useful in the the suburbs than on the Melville Koppies, because we spend a lot of energy eradicating them, and most can only be found on the remoter parts of the Koppies, if at all. But the worksheet gives kids a chance to look critically at the neighbours' gardens... or even the school grounds. The MS Word document has embedded photos so it may take some time to download. The preview will load more quickly and contains links to larger versions of the photos. (Text and photos - Wendy Carstens) Geologists, Archaelogists and others... A sample worksheet about the Melville Koppies' importance to Archaeologists, Geologists, and Researchers, and how they look for evidence. Prehistory A quick guide to the Stone Age Culture on Melville Koppies. The Iron Age An overview of the Iron Age culture represented on the Melville Koppies: Iron Age Smelting A guide to the iron smelting technology used by the early Iron Age settlers on Melville Koppies. Iron Age Cultural Package A worksheet on the Iron Age - with answers. Geological Walk
A Geological Trail, for older learners. This walk takes you through
millions of years of geological time,
and gives a quick guide to the basic structures which form the
Witwatersrand Supergroup.
